A 41-year-old man was bludgeoned with his own hammer in Valley Stream when a man attacked him and the victim dropped a tool bag he was carrying, police said.

The victim, whom Nassau County police did not identify, was taken to a hospital with several injuries, including a three-inch laceration on the back of his head.

His condition was unknown.

Police said the man was walking along Sunrise Highway near Mill Road Park when he was attacked at about 10:05 p.m. Tuesday. The attacker charged the victim, police said, knocking him to the ground.

The victim's tool bag fell open, and the attacker grabbed a hammer and struck the victim in the face and head, police said. The suspect fled on South Franklin Avenue.

A motive for the attack was not immediately known.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
