Man charged in armed robbery that nets $14
A woman sitting in her car on Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont was robbed at gunpoint Monday night, but the 22-year-old assailant, who stole just $14, didn't get far, police said.
Olvin Noe Ordonez-Cruz, of 365 Meacham Ave., Elmont, was arrested not long after the robbery, Nassau County police said. The handgun police said Ordonez-Cruz used to commit the crime proved to be a fake.
The robbery occurred at about 9 p.m., police said.
Police said the 41-year-old victim was sitting in her car when Ordonez-Cruz approached, flashed what the woman believed was a black automatic pistol, pointed it at her face -- and demanded cash. The woman handed over $14, police said. When Ordonez-Cruz fled, she called 911.
No one was injured during the robbery, police said.
Ordonez-Cruz was charged with second-degree robbery and is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
