Police on Thursday arrested a man who they said stabbed another man to death on a street in Hempstead early Tuesday.

Jose Trinidad Yanez Mejia of Pennsylvania Avenue, Hempstead, was arrested early Thursday and charged with second-degree murder, Nassau County police said. He is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Mejia stabbed the victim during an argument at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at the corner of Nichols Court and Main Street. The victim, identified only as a Hispanic man, died at a hospital, police said.

It was not immediately clear what led police to arrest Mejia or what provoked the fight.
