A man who police said had earlier robbed a bank near his home in Roslyn Heights was arrested Tuesday after police said he tried -- and failed -- to rob another bank in Uniondale.

Darren Lindo, 27, of Edwards Street, was arrested by Nassau County police officers as he fled a Citibank branch on Uniondale Avenue after a failed robbery attempt Tuesday afternoon.

Police said Lindo earlier robbed the First National Bank of Long Island on Mineola Avenue in Roslyn Heights after placing a metallic water bottle on the counter and telling a teller it was a bomb. Arson and bomb squad officers and officers from the Hazardous Materials Unit later determined the bomb to be a fake.

Police said Lindo robbed the first bank at 9:30 a.m. and ran south with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Later in the day, police said, Lindo walked into the Citibank branch and handed a demand note to a teller. When that teller began to walk away from the station with the note, police said Lindo approached a second teller and verbally demanded money. When he didn't get cash, he fled, police said.

Police responding to a 911 call for a bank robbery in progress spotted Lindo and arrested him. Lindo is charged with third-degree robbery, third-degree attempted robbery and a first-degree charge of placing a false bomb or hazardous substance.

His arraignment information was not immediately available.
