Man charged in mosque burglary
A Jamaica man was arrested after police said he broke into a mosque in New Cassel and stole money from the donation box.
Ahmad Saeed, 47, of 161-18 Normal Rd, was arrested moments after he left the Islamic Center of Long Island on Brush Hollow Road Thursday at 11:50 p.m., Nassau County police.
Police said a broken lock, two screwdrivers, a black crowbar and $477 was recovered.
They said a mosque official confirmed a lock on a donation box was gone and the box looted.
Police said a member of the mosque called 911 to report a man was "acting suspiciously" outside the center before the break-in. That witness told police he later saw Saeed in the mosque, police said.
Saeed was charged with third-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
