Police responding to a burglar alarm in Great Neck on Thursday say they zeroed in on a suspect later charged in two Nassau burglaries because he was wandering around an industrial area in the middle of the night.

The man, John Timpa, 43, of Bellerose Village, also had cuts on his arms and face, police said.

After detaining the man and reviewing video surveillance at crime scenes in Great Neck and Manhasset, detectives charged him with two counts of burglary, police said.

To commit the burglaries, Timpa broke the front windows of an auto body shop on East Shore Road in Great Neck and a restaurant on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset, police said.

Cops searching Timpa found rolls of coins he apparently stole from the restaurant, a police spokeswoman said.

Timpa has a long rap sheet, with convictions for crimes ranging from robbery to burglary, according to prison records that show he was paroled in November from Sing Sing Correctional Facility.

On Friday, Judge Helen Voutsinas of First District Court in Hempstead jailed Timpa on $15,000 bond or $7,500 cash bail, according to court records. It wasn't clear whether Timpa posted bail. He's due back in court Tuesday.
