Man charged with breaking through roofs
Police said DNA evidence led to charges against a Hempstead man Wednesday who they said broke through the roofs and a wall of three area businesses.
One of those burglaries was from July, the other two were committed in August 2006, police said.
Shawn Vance, 49, of Princeton Street, was charged with three counts of third-degree burglary and an open vehicle and traffic law warrant.
Nassau County police said Vance broke a hole in the roof of the Eagle Grocery on Westbury Boulevard at 11:20 p.m. on July 25, but left without taking anything.
The other two charges stem from a break-in on Aug. 29, 2006, police said. In that incident, police said Vance broke a hole through the roof of Turista Brokerage Travel on North Franklin Street, then broke a hole through an interior wall into El Porton Restaurant, where he stole cash from a register.
Police did not say how much was taken or how they obtained the DNA evidence used to make the arrest.
Vance is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
