Man charged with grand larceny in use of stolen U.S. Treasury check, cops say
A West Hempstead man has been charged with grand larceny after Nassau police said he used money from a stolen United States Treasury check.
Police said Sylvester Jackson, 54, opened a business bank account on June 21 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union at 1633 Dutch Broadway in Elmont.
Between June 23 and July 12, police said Jackson was seen on video at the Elmont and Hempstead branches making withdrawals from his account, which had been drawn from a deposited stolen U.S. Treasury check. Police said the credit union lost $49,000 as a result.
An investigation led detectives to a residence on 128th Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, where Jackson was arrested early Tuesday morning.
Jackson, of 227 Lindberg St. in West Hempstead, is charged with third-degree grand larceny, and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
