Nassau police said a 73-year-old man was critically injured while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont early Thursday when he was struck by a car whose driver was blinded by the bright morning sun.

Fourth Squad detectives said the 7:20 a.m. accident occurred as the man walked north to cross the street near Lucille Avenue. He was struck by an eastbound 2008 Honda driven by a 55-year-old woman, police said, adding that the victim suffered head injuries and was listed in critical condition at a hospital. Police declined to release the names of the people involved in the crash and the hospital.

No criminality is suspected, police said.
