A Manorhaven woman managed to escape a raging fire from a second-floor window in her home Tuesday morning, but her husband died in the blaze, Nassau police and fire officials said.

Albert Rosen, 73, went into cardiac arrest after suffering smoke inhalation, police said, and died at 11:55 a.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. He had been found in a second-story bathroom, police said.

Rosen's wife, Jan, 70, who was also on the second floor, was able to escape on her own onto the roof of a sunroom. She was suffering from smoke inhalation and was taken to St. Francis. An update on her condition wasn't immediately available.

A dog also died in the blaze, officials said.

The blaze appears to have begun in the basement, said Det. Sgt. Daniel Ayrovainen, a police arson/bomb squad supervisor.

The county fire marshal's office must determine the cause, he said.

But investigators don't believe the cause of the fire was suspicious as there was no evidence of an accelerant or a dispute, police said.

More than 100 firefighters from six departments battled the blaze at the home on Sintsink Drive West. The fire was reported at about 7:25 a.m. Fire officials said the home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters from Port Washington, Plandome, Manhasset-Lakeville, Roslyn, Glenwood Landing and Sea Cliff fought the fire for several hours.
