A man in his 30s is lucky to be alive after he fell off a Long Island Rail Road platform in Bellmore Monday night - only to have an approaching train stop in the nick of time.

A railroad spokesman said a preliminary investigation by Metropolitan Transportation Authority police determined the man may have been suffering from diabetic shock.

The incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Railroad spokesman Sam Zambuto said a train was nearing the station when the man fell onto the tracks.

"He was not struck by the train," Zambuto said. "The train came to a stop."

Another commuter called 911 and MTA police and EMS were dispatched to the scene, Zambuto said. He said the man was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with undisclosed injuries.

Two trains - one eastbound, one westbound - were delayed about 30 minutes each, Zambuto said. Each was held outside Bellmore station, he said.
