Authorities, including the U.S. Marshal's New York-New Jersey Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations, have arrested a 32-year-old man in Essex County, N.J., charging him with the murder of a man in Roosevelt.

Alcides Diaz-Fernandez is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jose Romero, 31, of Roosevelt on June 3 and faces arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead pending extradition.

Nassau County police said Diaz-Fernandez was arrested by authorities working in conjunction with Homicide Squad detectives. Homeland Security Investigations is part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The exact time and location of the arrest were not known.

Police said Romero was killed at 7:10 p.m. on June 3 during an altercation in the rear parking lot of a deli on Nassau Road. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with what police described as "cuts and lacerations" -- and was pronounced at 9:27 p.m.

It was not clear what led authorities to arrest Diaz-Fernandez. Authorities said Diaz-Fernandez is fighting extradition. It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer.
