Man jumps to safety from burning Levittown home
A fast-moving blaze that engulfed a Levittown house Friday morning initially appears to have been an electrical fire that began inside the walls near the kitchen and spread throughout the home, the fire department said.
The homeowner's son - the only person at the Crabtree Lane home at the time - jumped to safety through a second-floor window, said Levittown's first assistant chief, Carl Pugliese.
Pugliese said it took as many as 150 firefighters from his agency and neighboring departments nearly 45 minutes to bring the 9:47 a.m. fire under control.
The fire happened in Levittown geographically but within the jurisdiction of the East Meadow fire department.
The jumper, a man in his 20s, was brought to Nassau University Medical Center in nearby East Meadow to be treated for smoke inhalation and an ankle injury, Pugliese said. His name wasn't made public.
No firefighters were injured. The county fire marshal's office is investigating, he said.
The fire appears to have started near the kitchen, Pugliese said.
"It did quite a bit of damage to the house," he said.
