A man who acted as if he was armed with a handgun robbed a Hicksville gas station early Friday, taking about $230 in cash before fleeing, police said.

The robbery occurred at the BP station on Jerusalem Avenue at about 12:15 a.m.

Nassau County police said a 19-year-old clerk was working at the station when the robber entered wearing a black wool cap, a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. Police said the robber "simulated having a handgun" and demanded the clerk open the store safe.

When the clerk was unable to open the safe, police said the robber stole the cash from the register and ran.

No one was injured.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
