Police said a pedestrian who was believed to have been killed in an early-morning accident on the north service road of the Long Island Expressway Thursday in Roslyn Heights was only injured -- and now is hospitalized in critical condition after apparently being struck by a car.

The man's identity has not been released. Nassau County police said the investigation into the accident, which occurred before 6 a.m. near Powerhouse Road and Roslyn Road, is continuing and additional information was not readily available.

Police originally said the man had been killed, but said he was now at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

Confusing the situation further was that police also are investigating an accident involving an overturned vehicle near the intersection.

The driver of that vehicle was injured, though no additional details are available.

Police said it is unclear how the two incidents are related, but said investigators were focusing on whether the pedestrian was coming to the assistance of the driver in the overturned car -- and then was struck by an another vehicle at the scene.

The car accident was reported in a 911 call at 5:52 a.m.

It was not immediately clear how police learned of the pedestrian incident, which was not reported in the 911 call about the overturned vehicle.
