A 25-year-old man was shot in the hand when another man fired "several rounds" at him on a street in New Cassel late Sunday night, police said.

The victim, who was transported by private car to a hospital for treatment, said he did not know the assailant, Nassau County police said.

The incident took place near the intersection of Juniper Lane and Maplewood Drive at about 10:20 p.m., police said.

Police said the victim was struck in the left hand when the shooter fired "several rounds" at him from a semiautomatic handgun. The shooter then fled the scene.

No gun was recovered.
