Police are looking for a man suspected in the theft of a BMW from a Westbury garage Monday morning. The car was later found damaged and abandoned.

Nassau County police said in a new release that the 48-year-old car owner opened the garage door of her Baldwin Drive home, started her 1995 BMW 325i, and went back inside the home.

A few minutes later, about 7:40 a.m., the victim's 13-year-old daughter went to the garage and found someone in the driver's seat, police said.

"The subject then backed the vehicle out of the garage and fled the scene west on Baldwin Drive," police said.

The driver lost control not far down the road, "damaging a driveway and several trees," police said.

He continued south onto Powells Lane and abandoned the BMW between Dartmouth and Jefferson streets, police said.

No one was injured.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to anonymously call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
