A Freeport man faces assault charges after allegedly stabbing a woman in the arm and hand Thursday in Freeport, Nassau County First Squad detectives said Friday.

Freeport police responded to a call of a stabbing at 84 Broadway around 6:20 p.m., according to a release. A man apparently stabbed the woman, 41, in the left arm and hand. She was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Later, Freeport police arrested Celestino Mangia, 57, of 88 N. Columbus Ave., the release said.

He is charged with second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
