Man struck by train passing through New Hyde Park; travel resumes

An unidentified man was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train at the New Hyde Park Station Sunday afternoon as it was passing through on its way to Penn Station in Manhattan.

LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan said the investigation is ongoing but it is believed the man, described as elderly, was on the platform and somehow was struck.

Service was suspended on the Oyster Bay, Ronkonkoma, and Port Jefferson lines in both directions more than two hours but was restored about 1:55 p.m., Donovan said.

Donovan said the 11:36 a.m. train from Huntington, due in Penn Station at 12:39 p.m., was traveling west through the station and was an express that had no scheduled stops in New Hyde Park.

Donovan said that shortly after noon Metropolitan Transit Authority police received a call from someone reporting a man had been struck by a train.

"We're waiting for the detective division to come and give us a sense of what happened," Donovan said.
