Man whose body was found under Wantagh LIRR platform likely not hit by train, MTA says

A man whose body was found beneath a Long Island Rail Road platform Sunday in Wantagh did not have injuries consistent with being struck by a train, MTA police said.

Salvatore Arena, a spokesman for the LIRR, said Monday that Metropolitan Transportation Authority police think they know the man's identity and are attempting to notify family before releasing his name.

The body of the man, in his 50s, was found about 7:30 a.m. between the track and the south side train platform.

A crew member of an eastbound 6:25 a.m. train out of Penn Station scheduled to arrive in Babylon at 7:43 a.m. reported he had seen what appeared to be a body under the platform, Arena said.

Arena said the train's engineer told police his train did not strike the body, and police said Monday the man did not have apparent injuries consistent with being struck by a train.

Police also said they had no new information, including the condition of the body or how long it was under the platform before being discovered. The investigation is ongoing, Arena said.
