Reminiscent of billboard trucks that campaigned for and against politicians over the years, Nassau now has trucks carrying County Executive Edward Mangano's messages on their sides. When one of the trucks was spotted last week touting Mangano as "building a better, brighter Nassau," spokesman Brian Nevin said the county bought two of what are called "mobile stages" two years ago "to provide residents with a setting for family entertainment."

"These vehicles," he said, "generate revenue for the county as they are available for private rental." He said they were purchased with capital funds -- borrowed money paid back over time -- but declined to reveal the price of the vehicles or how much rental revenue they have raised.-- Celeste Hadrick
