Maple syrup spill in Munsey Park and 'no pancakes'

It was a sweet nothing.

About 15 firefighters rushed to Munsey Park on Thursday night to mop up an unusual spill — maple syrup.

It turned out to be just two bottles of syrup on Park Avenue, with vehicles tracking the sticky mess about 400 feet up and down the residential street, said Mark Kiess, first deputy chief of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department.

“Two trucks, one chief and no pancakes,” Kiess quipped.

He said the fire dispatcher put out the call when Nassau police asked for assistance shortly after 8:30 p.m.

“When the dispatcher said what it was, it was more like ‘Excuse me? What?’ ” Kiess said.

As he rushed to the scene, Kiess imagined a truck full of maple syrup and wondered what it was doing going down a residential street.

By the time he got to the scene, the fire chief said, he never saw any broken syrup bottles because an officer had already picked up most of the glass.

Even though the small amount of syrup spilled posed no danger, Kiess said, firefighters put down a cat litter-like substance that’s usually used to help mop up oil at crash scenes.
