A 32-year-old man was arrested Monday, charged with assault and weapon possession, after he stabbed two men during an argument on a street in Hempstead, police said.

Marvin Mejia, of 12 Elk Court, Hempstead, was charged with first-degree and second-degree assault, as well as with fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon, after being taken into custody at a hospital -- where he was being treated for a head laceration, Nassau police said.

Police said Mejia suffered the wound when one of the victims struck him in the head with a belt "while trying to protect himself" in the stabbing.

The incident occurred on Main Street at 1:50 a.m.

Police identified the victims only as 32-year-old and 38-year-old men and said both were stabbed in the abdomen.

Both were taken to a hospital by private auto and were treated for puncture wounds, police said. Police said both were in stable condition.

Mejia is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
