Effective Wednesday night, the southbound Meadowbrook Parkway will be closed for roadwork each weeknight this month in the Town of Hempstead, from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., weather permitting, state officials said.

The closure will be between the Southern State Parkway and Merrick Road, the state Department of Transportation said.

In October, two northbound travel lanes will be closed each weeknight, also from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., with one lane remaining open, the DOT said.

The Meadowbrook closures "are needed to perform a $3.2-million, 2.7-mile resurfacing project that requires the removal of the old, worn pavement surface and markings followed by the installation of new pavement surface and markings," the DOT said in a news release.

An estimated 97,000 motorists each day use that section of roadway, the DOT said.

Drivers are urged to use alternates routes such as the Wantagh State Parkway or Merrick Road.

The roadwork "may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather," the DOT said.
