Merrick school says threat not valid
Students entering Calhoun High School in Merrick on Friday morning were subjected to extra security and bag checks after a custodian cleaning a boys' bathroom Thursday night found a bomb threat scribbled on a stall.
Nassau County police said First Precinct officers and a K-9 unit swept the building Thursday, but found nothing after the janitor discovered the note and called 911 at 10:38 p.m.
A police spokesman said the note, scrawled on the wall of a bathroom stall, warned of a bomb going off at 8 a.m. Friday.
Calls to principal David Seinfeld were answered by public relations firm Zimmerman/Edelson Inc., which said police were immediately notified of the threat, searched the building and found it was safe.
"To ensure safety, the school has added additional security measures, including backpack searches today," the statement said.
Calhoun is in the Bellmore-Merrick School District. The bathroom where the message was found is on the second floor, police said.
In a recorded phone message distributed to district parents, Seinfeld said he had been alerted to the bomb scare Thursday evening and said the regular school day and after-school activities, including a pep rally, were to go on as scheduled.

Police said the investigation into the incident is continuing.
