The family of a Great Neck man who has been missing since Monday is hoping the public can help find him.

Steven Mayer, 62, was supposed to be on his way to work as a metals trader in Huntington when he may have gotten disoriented and lost, family members say.

Mayer's wife, Susan, said she last saw him Monday morning as the couple got ready for work. She left at 7:30 a.m. for her job as a nurse. Her husband usually leaves around 8 a.m., she said.

However, at 9:30 a.m., when he had not arrived for work, someone from his office called him and Mayer said he was on the Long Island Expressway and would be there shortly, family members said. At 11:30 a.m., Mayer's office called him again and again Mayer said he was nearby.

No one has talked to him since.

Family members say they fear he may be disoriented because he usually takes the Northern State Parkway to work, not the LIE. They also say Mayer's cell phone used reception from a tower in Riverhead at around 3 p.m. Monday. They say he called his deceased parents' number several times and they fear he may be confused.

His wife said Mayer, a longtime member of the Great Neck Synagogue, has no history of mental issues and has never disappeared before. She added that he takes medication to prevent seizures, and has been without it since he disappeared.

Mayer is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds, has brown hair, and wears glasses. He was driving a 2010 four-door silver Nissan Sentra with New York State license plate number EWN-4035.

"This is a nightmare," Mayer's wife said. "We want to find him. We certainly hope we get . . . [him] back quickly and in good health."

Nassau police issued a "silver alert," urging the public to be on the lookout for Mayer. The family urges anyone who sees him to call 911 or the family at 516-847-5005.
