Town of Hempstead officials said that more than 250 trees have fallen throughout the township as a result of Saturday's powerful rain and wind storm. Town crews are out Sunday clearing roads.

"The town appears to be the hardest hit area of Long Island," town supervisor Kate Murray said. "At one point, Hempstead Town had more power outages than all other townships on Long Island combined."

Earlier Sunday, Long Island Power Authority officials reported 56,000 outages in the Town of Hempstead, down from 82,000 at the peak of the storm Saturday night. No other towns were reported to have as many outages, LIPA said.

Murray said she has reached out to LIPA chairman Kevin Law to coordinate removal of downed trees.

Murray said that tree crews will continue to work Sunday and into early this week until all downed trees are removed.
