Mother, toddler escape serious injury after being struck by hit-and-run truck in Farmingdale

A toddler and his mother escaped serious injury Wednesday after they were struck by a hit-and-run truck in Farmingdale, Nassau County police said.

Around 3:50 p.m., the 2-year-old unexpectedly ran onto Conklin Street between Main and Elizabeth streets, police said.

The child's 28-year-old mother ran after him, attempting to rescue him from oncoming traffic, according to a police news release.

The two were struck by an eastbound 1998 Peterbilt truck, which continued east.

The mother managed to grab the child and pull him out of the immediate path of the truck before it struck them. Police could not provide further information on how the victims were struck or grazed by the truck and escaped life-threatening injury.

The toddler suffered an abrasion to his leg and his mother injuries to her hip and legs; both were taken to a hospital for treatment and evaluation, police said. Their conditions were not available.

Police located the truck's driver, Elvin Majano Diaz, 27, of Central Islip, and charged him with leaving the scene of an incident with an injury.

He was issued an appearance ticket to be answered Aug. 21 at First District Court in Hempstead.

The vehicle was impounded for a brake and safety check.
