A 20-year-old man riding with his girlfriend on a motorcycle was killed Tuesday night when he collided with a van at a Garden City intersection where traffic signals had failed due to superstorm Sandy, Nassau County police said.

Police are considering the death storm-related.

The identity of the dead motorcyclist has not been released, pending notification of next of kin, police said.

Police said the rider's 18-year-old girlfriend suffered fractures to both arms. Her identity also was not released.

The driver of the van was not injured, police said.

Police said the crash occurred at the intersection of Stewart Avenue and Washington Avenue at 8:25 p.m.

The motorcycle, a 2001 Kawasaki, was headed northbound on Washington, police said, when it collided with the 2003 Ford Econoline van headed eastbound on Stewart.

The motorcyclist was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, where police said he was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital.

Police said both vehicles were impounded and no criminality is suspected.
