MTA: Man dies crossing train tracks in Syosset

Metropolitan Transportation Authority police are investigating the death of a Huntington man who was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train at the Syosset station early Tuesday.

Meredith Daniels, a spokeswoman for the commuter service, said the man, 34, appeared to be "trying to go from one platform to another" when he was struck and killed at about 12:45 a.m.

The man was hit by an eastbound train that left Penn Station at 11:42 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Huntington at 12:48 a.m., Daniels said.

It is not clear why the man decided to cross the tracks rather than use the pedestrian overpass, LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena said.

Police have not released the name of the man pending notification of his family.
