The windows of at least 21 vehicles were vandalized overnight Saturday into Sunday in Massapequa and Massapequa Park, Nassau County police said.
Some car owners said it appeared that the windows had been shot, but police said Sunday they do not believe a gun was used.
Police said they were investigating "criminal mischief" incidents that occurred between 6 p.m. Saturday and 12:20 p.m. Sunday and affected a wide range of vehicles.
No one was hurt in the incidents and no arrests have been made.
Dan Flannelly, 66, of Massapequa, said the rear window of his silver 1992 Plymouth Voyager was damaged.
His wife woke up shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday to noises outside and their dogs barking, said Flannelly, a retired NYPD officer.
Nassau County police officers arrived minutes later, probably alerted by a neighbor, Flannelly said.
"It had to be a pellet gun or a BB gun that damaged it, because the middle was blown out and the sides were still intact," he said. The rear window of a second car on Locust Street had similar damage, he said.
Massapequa Park resident Matthew Maughan, another victim of the spree, said the rear window of his gray 2002 Mercury Mountaineer was broken sometime before 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Maughan said his son was returning home from work when he saw the vandalized window and alerted his parents.
"This is random craziness by some hooligans," Maughan said. "I can't see adults doing this."
Anyone with information about the incidents can contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
