N. Hempstead GOP announces candidates

The race for North Hempstead town supervisor in November will be a rematch from two years ago as Republican Lee Tu again takes on Jon Kaiman, who is seeking his fifth term.

The Republicans, who held their nominating convention a week ago, didn't announce their slate of candidates until yesterday. The Democrats named their contenders last week.

Tu, of Albertson, is a manager at a public accounting firm.

For one town board seat, Republicans nominated a candidate originally from Iran to run against a Democratic candidate who also is from Iran.

Hooshang Nematzadeh, 68, of Kings Point, is the GOP nominee in the 4th District, which includes communities in Great Neck, Roslyn and Manhasset. He was elected to the Central Board of the United Mashadi Jewish Community of America and is the executive vice president of the Iranian American Jewish Federation of New York. He is the first vice president of the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce.

"My intention, more than anything else, is to create a favorable business atmosphere in the area where we live," Nematzadeh said.

Nematzadeh is a real estate agent and residential developer.

For that seat, Democrats last week nominated Anna M. Kaplan, 45, of Kensington, a town board of zoning and appeals member and vice president of the Great Neck Library Board.

Current town board member Maria-Christina Poons, a Democrat, is not running.

North Hempstead Republicans have also named: Jane Centrella, of New Hyde Park, for receiver of taxes; Edward Scott, of Albertson, for the 2nd District council seat; Dina DeGiorgio, of Port Washington, for the 6th District council seat.
