N. Massapequa man accused of knife, bat attack

A 31-year-old North Massapequa man was arrested Wednesday in an attack on a 22-year-old man on Sunday, July 7, Nassau County police said.

It seems he picked the wrong victim.

Michael Giovannelli, of 564 N. Suffolk Ave., surrendered to police at the Seventh Precinct on Wednesday and faces two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of second-degree menacing.

He is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Giovannelli first attacked the victim with a knife on North King Avenue at about 3:25 p.m. July 7. But, police said, the victim managed to knock Giovannelli to the ground, thwarting the attack.

Giovannelli then went to his car and retrieved a bat, police said. But, police said the victim again knocked Giovannelli to the ground -- causing him to flee the scene in his car.

The victim was not injured.
