Naqunne Jackson of New Cassel found guilty of murder, DA says

The murder trial of a New Cassel man accused of shooting a 31-year-old man to death after an argument last year has ended with a guilty verdict, the Nassau district attorney's office said Tuesday.

In September 2013, police arrested Naqunne Jackson, 30, in the slaying of William Moody, also of New Cassel.

A jury on Monday convicted Jackson on a second-degree murder charge, along with two weapon charges, prosecutors said. They said he faces up to 40 years to life in prison.

Nassau County Judge David Sullivan is scheduled to sentence Jackson on Jan. 30.

Authorities said that on Sept. 22, 2013, Jackson shot Moody twice after they argued on Prospect Avenue in New Cassel before Moody was found dead from his injuries near the shooting scene on State Street.

A prosecutor said at the time of Jackson's arraignment he had nine prior arrests, two prior felony convictions, four prior misdemeanor convictions and a parole violation in his criminal record. State records show he previously served prison time for a weapon charge and a drug charge.

Jackson's attorney, Christopher Devane of Mineola, declined to comment Tuesday on the verdict.
