Nassau health officials lift swim advisory for four North Shore beaches

The Nassau County Department of Health said Wednesday that it has lifted its advisory against swimming at four North Shore beaches.
On Monday, as a "precautionary measure," officials advised swimmers to stay out of waters at Lattingtown's Creek Club, Laurel Hollow Beach, North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington and Piping Rock Beach Club in Locust Valley.
The advisory was issued because storm-water runoff from heavy rainfall can elevate bacteria levels above New York State standards, health officials said.
An advisory was issued Tuesday by Suffolk County against swimming and bathing at 63 beaches because levels of bacteria may have risen due to this week's heavy rain.
Suffolk health officials suggested not even touching the water until the rain had stopped and at least 24 hours had passed.
The Suffolk advisory is expected to be lifted this morning unless elevated levels of bacteria are found in water samples, health officials said.
