Extra police officers will be assigned to a drunken-driving initiative in May as part of a state STOP-DWI grant, Nassau County police said Friday.

The initiative begins Friday and includes nine weekend dates that will use "additional police officers to conduct an extensive DWI enforcement initiative," according to a statement by County Executive Edward Mangano and Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale.

The Highway Patrol Bureau will be responsible for coordinating and planning target areas in the county, the release said.

STOP-DWI stands for "Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated" and was created by the state legislature in 1981, according to Christopher Mistron, coordinator for the program in Nassau County.

Funding comes from fines paid by convicted drunken drivers and no tax dollars are used, Mistron said.

Dates for the initiative are this Friday and Saturday; Fridays, May 11, May 18 and May 25; Saturdays, May 12, May 19 and May 26; and Sunday, May 27.
