Nassau County health officials issued an advisory Wednesday against swimming at Hewlett Point Beach in East Rockaway and Island Park Beach in Island Park, as runoff from heavy rain may adversely affect water quality.

“This advisory is issued as a precautionary measure for beaches known to be impacted by storm water runoff caused by heavy rainfall,” which can lead to elevated levels of bacteria, health officials said in a news release.

The advisory is to be lifted at 8 a.m. Thursday, unless more heavy rain impacts the area or water samples show elevated levels of bacteria, officials said.
