Nassau College seeks $258 tuition hike
Nassau Community College is proposing an annual tuition hike of $258 for full-time students as it struggles with a cut in state aid.
The budget proposal, submitted Monday to the Nassau County Legislature as part of the college's $203 million budget request for 2011-12, would raise tuition to $3,990. College officials said they need the tuition hike to help offset a $2.75 million reduction in state aid.
Legislative presiding officer Peter J. Schmitt (R-Massapequa) reacted favorably to the tuition proposal. "Nassau Community College is the jewel of Nassau County," he said. Even with the increase, "tuition will remain less than $4,000 per year, and that is a bargain," he said.
The Nassau Community College Federation of Teachers, the full-time faculty union, suggested an additional tuition hike of $150. "That's not to save jobs but to maintain our quality of education," said Frank Frisenda, the union's vice president.
A public hearing on the budget will be held June 28.
