Nassau police made 40 drunken driving arrests over the holiday weekend, with a large number of those arrests during the overnight of New Year's Eve, officials said.

From 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 7 a.m. on Jan. 1., 27 people were arrested and charged with DWI in Nassau County, according to police. Thirteen additional arrests were made from 7 a.m. on Jan. 1 to 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 3.

Suffolk police were compiling the number of drunken driving arrests Monday.

Suffolk Sheriff's office made 11 DWI arrests from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 8 a.m. Jan. 3.

Last year, Nassau police made 29 DWI arrests from the time period of 11 p.m. Dec. 31 through 9 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2010. Suffolk police made 28 DWI arrests between 4 p.m. Dec. 31 to 8 a.m. Jan. 1.

In 2009, 46 drivers were arrested for DWI in different time periods; Nassau had 27 drivers charged from midnight to 9 a.m. on Jan. 1., and Suffolk police charged 19 drivers between the hours of 4 p.m. New Year's Eve and 8 a.m. the following day.
