Nassau correction officer killed in crash

An off-duty Nassau County correction officer was killed in a single-car accident Tuesday on the Southern State Parkway near the Rockville Centre-South Hempstead border, State Police said.
Police identified the officer as Frank Milano, 36, of Elmont.
The crash occurred at 12:01 a.m. on the westbound Southern State just east of Exit 19, Peninsula Boulevard. Police said the car, a Toyota Camry, veered off the parkway and into a wooded area, striking trees and sustaining severe damage. The officer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the road was closed until 2:50 a.m. Tuesday for the accident investigation.
The cause of the crash has not been determined.
