Nassau County: Increase in larcenies from vehicles

There has been an increase in larcenies from automobiles, Nassau County officials said Thursday.

“The thefts are occurring at all times of the day and night in which vehicles have been left unlocked,” County Executive Edward Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said in a statement.

The officials urged county residents to be on the lookout for suspicious people and to call 911 to report suspicious activity.

The officials recommended that residents safeguard their vehicles by:

-Always locking their vehicle, even when parked in the driveway or garage.

-Never leave or hide a smart key, valet key, or spare key anywhere in or on your vehicle, no matter where you park it.

-Never leave valuables in the vehicle.

-If possible, park the vehicle in a locked garage.

-Keep the exterior of homes and driveways well illuminated.

-Close all vehicle windows completely when parked.

-Also, secure the garage door opener to prevent access to the house.
