Nassau Democratic county legislators have unanimously chosen Legis. Kevan Abrahams of Freeport to become their new leader on Jan. 1, replacing Legis. Diane Yatauro of Glen Cove, who did not seek re-election this year.
Abrahams will be the first African-American leader from either party since the county legislature began in 1996.
"It's humbling and an honor to lead the Democratic caucus," Abrahams said Tuesday. "They have been steadfast and relentless in their message of holding Republicans' feet to the fire on increasing taxes, wasteful spending, outside contracts as well as increased county fees. I am going to continue that message."
Whether Abrahams becomes the majority leader or minority leader is still to be decided by a recount of the recent legislative elections. Currently, Republicans have an 11-8 edge, but less than 100 votes separate the Republican and Democratic candidates in two districts.
"I am hopeful it is majority leader, but if it's not, we'll roll up our sleeves and be prepared to work in the minority," Abrahams said.
Abrahams, 37, first was elected to the legislature in a 2002 special election. He had served as finance director for the then-Democratic majority.
"I look forward to working with him," said current Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa).
Abrahams said, "I look forward to working with Legislator Schmitt as well as County Executive [Edward] Mangano. I think it could be a positive year if we focus on the taxpayer."
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said he looked "forward to working with Kevan and the Minority Caucus as cooperation will speed Nassau's recovery from decades of failed fiscal policies."
Abrahams was elected minority leader six years ago in a political maneuver during a partisan fight for presiding officer, but a court threw out that vote.
