Word spread in Nassau political circles last month that Nassau GOP chairman Joseph Mondello opposed County Executive Edward Mangano's plan to buy a nursery in Bethpage, his hometown, from a friend and parks appointee for an educational center.

Mondello turned against it after hearing concerns from other Republicans, including the legislature's presiding officer, Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow), insiders say.

Multiple Republicans said Mondello made himself clear Thursday when he told GOP leaders, "Residents are still out of their mind over taxes. Any of you guys not running this year, don't do something stupid like trying to help a friend. It won't be allowed to happen." A spokesman said Mondello was not talking about Mangano, who did not respond to a request for comment.

He said Mangano continues to enjoy the chairman's fullest confidence and support.-- Celeste Hadrick
