Nassau officer hit by car still in critical
A Nassau County police officer remains in critical but stable condition at Nassau University Medical Center more than two weeks after he was struck by a passing car in Lawrence, officials said Thursday.
There is no timetable for the release of the officer, whose identity is being withheld, a police spokeswoman said.
The officer, assigned to crack down on speeders, was struck by a motorist Oct. 2 as he stood outside his patrol car on the northbound side of Route 878, the Nassau Expressway, just north of the Atlantic Beach Bridge. The driver was not charged.
The officer was rushed to NUMC, where he underwent pelvic surgery two days later. The hospital said at the time that a more extensive surgery could take place in a week, but that has not happened, a spokeswoman said.
The officer is a 29-year veteran with several awards, including two for saving lives, police said.
