Nassau police hold gun buy back program
Nassau County officials announced Wednesday that they are authorizing another gun buy back event for June 22 with the goal of reducing the number of illegal firearms on the streets.
The session, to be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Emanuel Baptist Church, 1880 Pelham St., Elmont, was announced jointly by County Executive Edward Mangano, District Attorney Kathleen Rice, and Police Commissioner Thomas Dale.
Forfeiture funds from the police department and district attorney's office are used to buy anonymously from individuals unlicensed, operable handguns for $100 each, rifles for $200 each and assault rifles for $400, officials said.
During the county's buy back event in Uniondale in February, 330 firearms were brought in, the largest number since the program began in 2008.
