Nassau County police are investigating the death Wednesday of a man in police custody who they say was running naked on a Baldwin street and tried to board a commuter bus.

The man was later identified by police as Christian Collado, 31, of Baldwin.

A First Precinct police officer was told a naked man was running in traffic on Merrick Road near Grand Avenue at 8:16 a.m., police said in a news release.

The officer saw the man pounding on the door of a commuter bus, trying to gain entry, police said.

The officer, in an effort to prevent the man from injuring himself or others, put him in handcuffs, police said. An ambulance and more police responded, but the man then had "an unknown medical emergency," the release said.

Medical assistance was provided at the scene, police said, and the man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:56 a.m.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
