Nassau police to hold open house

Pretend you're under arrest in the slammer, watch Nassau police rappel down their own building and step into the mobile command bus, where top officials oversee crisis situations.
The Nassau County Police Department is holding its annual open house event from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday in Mineola as part of National Police Week.
School trips and children are invited, too. They can get ID cards under the KID-PIX Photo Identification Program, visit the police museum, go to Children's Safety Town and play "radar" ball toss, which calculates how fast their balls are going -- sort of like car-speed radar without the speeding tickets.
Just about every specialized police unit will be at the event, including the crime scene search section, aviation unit, arson/bomb squad and emergency services. Officers from the bureau of special operations will rappel from the two-story police headquarters, while dogs and horses will show how they're integral partners in policing.
In the records bureau, the detention cell area will also be unlocked to the public.
It's the 87th anniversary of the Nassau police department.
Events will take place in the parking lot behind police headquarters at 1490 Franklin Ave. in Mineola.
