TIMELINE OF NASSAU'S TRANSGENDER BAN CASE

  • In February, 2024, Blakeman issued an executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from playing on women’s and girls' sports teams on county property.
  • In May, 2024 State Supreme Court Justice Francis Ricigliano struck down the executive order, saying Blakeman went "beyond the scope of his authority."
  • In June, 2024 Nassau County lawmakers voted to pass a law mandating the same ban.
  • In July, 2024, the Roller Rebels team submitted a permit request to host events on Nassau County facilities from August 2024 through October 2025.
  • The same month, the NYCLU, on the team's behalf, and Attorney General Letitia James sued Nassau over the law, claiming it violated state civil rights and human rights law.
  • The NYCLU also filed for an injunction, an attempt to block enforcement of the law while the case was ongoing, to ensure the Roller Rebels "could use county-run athletic facilities in a manner that is inclusive of all their members, including transgender women."
  • In January, Nassau's Supreme Court denied that motion and upheld the law, stating that the county "is not obligated to provide a recreational setting for each and every individual residing within its confines."
  • In March, the NYCLU appealed the denial of the injunction to the Appellate Division, which heard the case last week. No decision was issued and it was unclear whether the issue was moot due to the lower court's decision.
  • Oct. 6, Nassau's Supreme Court ruled in favor of Nassau County, dismissing the NYCLU lawsuit. Justice Bruce Cozzens also dismissed the suit filed by James.
