Realizing his wife lay dying, the husband of the woman gunned down in a late-night hail of bullets outside their North Valley Stream home collapsed sobbing and screaming into the arms of a police officer, an upstairs neighbor recalled Wednesday afternoon.
"Oh my God! That's my wife!" the husband shouted as medics checked the pulse of the badly injured woman, Jeanmarie Beaudouin, according to the neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she fears the assailant, who is still at large.
Two days after the Monday night shooting, neighbors remained stunned at the seeming randomness of the deadly attack on this block just north of the Southern State Parkway, and police didn't provide any details on what, if any leads, they had in the case.
Moments before the shooting, the neighbor had been startled into a panic when she heard a shot, a scream and then a series of more shots outside the one-story ranch.
Police say Beaudouin, 37, was walking up her driveway when bullets struck her multiple times, mostly in the upper torso, at about 11:10 p.m.
Beaudouin's three daughters, 10, 6 and 3, and her husband were in their downstairs apartment at the time of the shooting, police have said.
The upstairs neighbor who heard the shots - and who rents from Beaudouin - was sitting at a window near the front lawn and driveway.
"I just heard an 'Ahhhh!' - a scream - and consecutive shots," the witness said.
She peeked outside and saw "so much blood."
"Her head was under the bushes. And then we looked - and it was her."
Beaudouin died a short time later at Franklin Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream.
Homicide detectives with the Nassau County police continue to investigate the slaying, said a department spokesman, Det. Lt. Kevin Smith.
Wednesday, mourners had placed candles in the driveway where Beaudouin was gunned down, and her loved ones from out of state came to the North Valley Stream home.
Beaudouin's brother said the family was too distraught to talk.
