New Cassel man arrested, bitten

A New Cassel man who beat another person with a belt and fled from officers Wednesday was later found by a canine unit and bitten by the police dog, Nassau police said.

The canine officer also received minor injuries trying to arrest Darwing Enrique Nunez, 28, police said.

Police said Third Precinct officers were on their way to another call when they saw Nunez and a male companion hitting a man with a belt about 3 a.m. in New Cassel, police said.

Both suspects ran off as officers approached, launching a search by the precinct and canine unit, police said.

The canine officer found Nunez in the rear of a Bond Street home, and a struggle followed as he tried to arrest Nunez, police said.

During the struggle, the police dog bit Nunez, police said.

Nunez and the officer were treated at hospitals and released, police said.

The suspect, of 217 Swalm St, was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of fourth-degree possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and third-degree criminal trespass.
